Σπουδές
Η Μαρία Κούση έλαβε διδακτορικό δίπλωμα Κοινωνιολογίας από το University of Michigan το 1984. Η διδακτορική της διατριβή αφορούσε τις κοινωνικo-οικονομικές επιπτώσεις του τουρισμού σε μία αγροτική κοινότητα της Κρήτης.
Σταδιοδρομία
Από το 1987 διδάσκει στο Τμήμα Κοινωνιολογίας της Σχολής Κοινωνικών Επιστημών του Πανεπιστημίου Κρήτης.
