Σύντομη περιγραφή
he overall goal of the proposed research is the socio-historical study of post-war prostitution in Greece, taking as a case-study the famous red-light district of Piraeus “Trouba”, which flourished in the 1950-60s and became the epicentre of a growing urban sexual and entertainment market.
The period of interest extends between 1955 and 1967, significant dates for the regulation of prostitution in general and for its development in Trouba specifically.
The research focuses on the public imprint of prostitution, addressed through two main objectives. First, it traces inscriptions of prostitution in the state apparatus through a historical study of the court archives of the district of Piraeus. Secondly, it looks at cultural and symbolic significations of prostitution through an analysis of representations of Trouba in court proceedings and popular discourse, including local and national Press and commercial films of the period. The research is interdisciplinary, taking a socio-historical approach. The theoretical framework is informed by feminist debates on gender and intersectionality, the History of sexuality, and the sociology of popular culture. Research methodology combines analysis of court proceedings of criminal cases involving the world of prostitution, of local and national Press and of selected films.
The research explores key aspects of the social construction of prostitution, such as the role of the state in defining and controlling, but perhaps also enabling, prostitution and the symbolic significance of prostitution in delimiting hegemonic and marginalised gender and class identities. It aims to contribute to our understanding of the rise of a post-war, modern market of sexual services and night entertainment and its link to urban subcultures, highlighting ideological and social conflicts implicated in process of modernisation. It also aims to contribute towards decentering dominant socio-historical paradigms, by comparing Trouba with relevant international cases.
