Center for Gender Studies
The Center for Gender Studies (Gender Laboratory), the only one at the University of Crete, hosts and supports studies and research on Gender and Equality issues. It was established in 2004 (Government Gazette 1523, T.B./15-10-03, number 109733/B1) within the framework of one of the planned actions of the EPEAEK II program (action category 4.2.1b) in collaboration, at that time, with the Departments of History and Archaeology, Philosophy and Social Studies.
Since 2009, the Laboratory has been part of the Department of Sociology and is housed and operates in the buildings of the Research Center of the University of Crete (KEME). The Center focuses on research, and builds a collection of archival material. It also organises scientific activities, including seminars and workshops, lectures by invited Greek and foreign speakers, and conferences, and offers a space for research meetings and collaborations.
The Laboratory promotes actions that contribute to raising awareness on gender issues in the university, the wider academic community, as well as of the competent bodies and as regards the local and wider society. To this end, it organizes scientific meetings, events, exhibitions and open discussions at the University of Crete and in the city of Rethymno, with the participation of experts from Greece and abroad. Through these meetings and events, scientific exchange is strengthened, as well as the experience of teachers and students on issues of gender and equality.
